Last night I found some old journals from 2002-2003 and read through them. Most entertaining and hilarious thing ever. Back in the day I had multiple xangas/myspaces that I catalogued ever single event that ever happened to me in great, unnecessary detail. I wish I wouldn’t have deleted them because I’m sure those would be comedic gold. I promise I won’t delete this one. I’m sure it will be great to look back on some day.
Anyways, the funniest entry from the discovered diaries was one from middle school when I went to Nazi Tree of Life Christian. Some background info: they were insane and had a vendetta against my family, so they took every rumor that floated around about me and called me into the office about it.
“Today I was in home ec class and Mrs Manchester came to take me to Mr Marrah [our principal]. He was accusing Stacey and Steph Pratt and I of smoking and “experimenting” with marijuana. How freaking ridiculous is that? Where do these people get this stuff?”
Seriously though, where’d they get that? Just to prove my innocence, 2 entries later I had my first kiss. I was definitely not smoking weed.
It’s Easter, so… Happy Easter. I didn’t go to church today, I feel guilty. I slept through my alarm. Who does that on Easter? I’m a bad pastor’s daughter. I need to start going more often.
Anyways, afterwards my mom busted out all these books and records about my family heritage and I found out my great great grandfather was a Brigadier General in the Civil War. He was the 3rd person to volunteer for the war and he was the captain of the very first group of black soldiers, 1800 to be exact. I thought that was pretty neat.
Anyways, I also found out he was born in Switzerland to the name Hermann Van Vasmer. He was of some royal blood there and lived in a castle, and left all that to move to the US and dropped that part of his name and changed our last name to his middle name, Lieb, which is my last name now (obviously).
There’s pictures of the “castle” … but it’s more of a manor and isn’t really what I picture as a castle. It’s not stone. Maybe my mental image of a castle has been jaded by Disney movies. In a letter he wrote to my grandpa while visiting it after it was sold, it says there were 70 apartments inside of it! It’s now a boarding house, which is probably like a modern day bed and breakfast. My mom and I want to go see it. Honestly, I just want a reason to go to Europe. If I’m ever rich, I’ll buy it back and move to Switzerland! That’d be fun to say I live in a castle. Anyways, it’s all really fascinating and I’m going to research it more with my mom. Should I change my last name to Van Vasmer? Bethany Van Vasmer.
