Lesson 1 – Commonly Misspelled Words

I compiled a list of words people I know often misspell or use incorrectly.  I am doing this for the good of mankind.  Please do us all a favor and bookmark this so you can use it as a reference.  No, seriously……… bookmark this.  Now.

  • Genius

 How most people spell it – Genious  - Unlike most of the other words on this list, I love when people spell this wrong.  It brings my joy. The reason why is because most of they time they’re sarcastically calling me a “genious” because I said something stupid.  I mean really, if you’re trying to insinuate that I’m stupid, at least do it while spelling correctly.

  • Ridiculous

 How most people spell it - RediculousMost people spell like they speak, but ridiculous isn’t one of the times it works.  Please learn to spell this, especially if it’s your favorite word to type online and you say it to me frequently….Also, *news flash*… you’re not supposed to say it “rediculous” either… but I’m not even opening that can of worms.

  •  Through
How most people spell it – Thru  - I don’t think people realize that “thru” is short hand. It’s not really spelled “thru,” you do understand that… right? I see people write it on papers, memos at work, and conversations online all the time… please just take the .026 second extra to type 3 extra keys and seem slightly intelligent (or at least of average intelligence instead of a 5th grade level)

  • You’re / Your
Most people use “your” for everything, regardless of if they should or not, but this is a very very bad habit to get into.  The apostrophe is two words being put together!  It’s that simple.

You’re = you + are
Your = ownership.

  •  They’re / There / Their
I’m not sure why, but seems like everyone gets these mixed up. If you just sit down and figure it out fir a minute, it’s really easy.

There = location … Let’s go there.
Their = ownership … That plate is theirs.
They’re = they are  … They’re ridiculous (oooh using past lessons! Oh shit!)

  •  Hence
This word isn’t so much misspelled, it’s just misused.  Think of it as a replacement for “therefore.”  You’re supposed to use it as an outcome, not a reason.  If you’re saying “She’s stupid, hence the hair” … that’s wrong. Just replace it with therefore “She’s stupid, therefore the hair” … that doesn’t sound right does it?  Right way to use it, “He was smart and funny, hence boyfriend material.,” or more accurately, “He was smart and funny, hence gay and taken.”

  • Definitely
I think this is the most commonly used word among people I know, and most of them spell it wrong.  I don’t even know how they spell it wrong, it’s all different types of ways. Defintely / Definately /Definitly … just horrible ways.

  •  Hehe / lolz / wowzers
Saying these words will decrease your IQ dramatically, this is a scientific fact. I’ve done research, people. Please study and get back to me, pop quiz Monday.
